September is peak hurricane season and the continental US is currently preparing for the arrival of Hurricane Florence. Virginia and the Carolinas have prepared for the storm surge and millions have evacuated while thousands more have sought shelter in a Red Cross community shelter. The storm is expected to bring 10 trillion gallons of rainfall to North Carolina according to weather.us meteorologist Ryan Maue.
What to do after a hurricane
Let your family and friends know you are safe by checking in at redcross.org/safeandwell or calling 1-866-GETINFO. Listen for information and special instructions from the authorities. If you evacuated, wait until you receive the OK to return home. If you evacuated, wait until you receive the OK to return home. When you return home, be sure to do the following:
- Stay alert as flooding can still occur.
- Be cautious before using water, as it could be contaminated.
- Immediately photograph any damage to your vehicle or property in preparation of contacting your insurance company.
- Do not walk through flooded areas as they could contain dangerous debris or be electrically charged.

As a hurricane victim, FEMA may be able to help. You can check to see if your city and state or zip code has been declared for Individual Assistance on disasterassistance.gov as well as find the closest FEMA Disaster Recover Center (DRCs) or contact your state’s emergency management agency.
